Wenda Mortlock – Embroidered Photograph for a Wedding Gift

We all wonder what to give as a wedding gift. We can always give money or buy from their gift registry but sometimes you just want something that has more meaning to the newlyweds. Our best friend’s son, whom we have known all his life, was married this summer in Calgary. The family’s summers at the cottage have contributed to making him the wonderful, talented, gregarious, smart, athletic man that he has become. He grew up on the lake. It was also here that we first met his girlfriend and now wife. So our wedding gift to them was three views of the cottage property that he so loves and misses now that his home is in Calgary.

Being an embroiderer you can’t just send three photographs, but, you can copy them onto fabric and embellish them with stitches. The background fabric of choice was cotton with very little texture. It was pressed first and then ironed onto a sheet of freezer paper, shiny side against the underside of the fabric. The edges were carefully cut, on all sides to the size of 8 ½ by 11 inches. That sheet was then placed in the printer cartridge so that the fabric would receive the printing. The photo was then placed in the copier and then I simply pressed “print”. Hopefully this process runs smoothly, it may get stuck and you will have to gently pull it out. Now you have your photograph on fabric, remove the freezer paper and stitch a backing fabric onto it, larger than the 8 ½ by 11 so that it will fit into an embroidery frame.  Now you are ready to have some fun embellishing!

The long and short of it is, they loved the gift!
